Abstract

Polychloroprene, which has been prepared by polymerizing chloroprene in the presence of 1.7 to 3.0 per cent elemental sulphur and has a viscosity of one to two million centipoises as measured at 50 DEG C. with a Brookfield viscometer, is cured at 20-200 DEG C. by compounding with a polyamine of the general formula H2N(RNH)nH where R is a divalent hydrocarbon radical which may be different in the same molecule but contains no more than 8 carbon atoms and n is an integer less than 5. Emulsion polymerization using a persulphate catalyst is used and a polymerization modifier particularly iodoform or a mercapto compound is preferably added in the polymerization of the chloroprene and a tetraalkyl thiuram disulphide is added as a short stop and plasticiser. Suitable polyamine curing agents are the phenylene and toluylene diamines, the diamino diphenylamines, and the bis-(amino-phenyl) phenylene diamines, ethylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, octamethylene diamine, aminoethyl hexamethylene diamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, aminophenyl ethylene diamine and bis-(aminophenyl) ethylene diamine. A divalent metal oxide such as the oxide of magnesium, lead or zinc or mixtures thereof are preferably also added. A vegetable or mineral oil may also be added and the usual antioxidants reinforcing agents, pigments, fillers, extenders, odorants and blowing agents. The ingredients may be incorporated by mixing which may introduce air bubbles which when the mixture is heated above 100 DEG C. to vulcanize expand and yield a sponge; alternatively, such bubbles may be removed by application of a vacuum. The compositions may be heated in moulds to prepare for example printing rolls.
