Abstract
801,282. Railway points detectors; detecting spread of rails. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and DENNISON, H. F. April 27, 1956 [May 17, 1955], No. 14178/55. Class 105. In a railway points detector in an indication circuit and/or interlocking circuit each stock rail a, b has a rod A, B connected thereto adjacent that part against which the points tongue abuts so that relative movement between the two rods due to the spread of the two stock rails and consequent wide-to-gauge condition, opens a normally closed contact included in a circuit for giving an indication of said condition, e.g. in the detection and/or interlocking circuits. These normally closed contacts are preferably accommodated in the usual lock and detector mechanism of the points. As shown in Fig. 1, where separate lock and detector mechanisms X, Y are provided for each points tongue, the rods A, B are taken one into each mechanism to operate a contact device as indicated in Fig. 3. Each rod, e.g. A, has a flat surface 0 which terminates in a ramp 8 and a roller R normally rests on the surface O at the foot of the ramp so that movement of rod A in the direction of the arrow W moves the roller up the ramp thereby, through a link T between roller R and contact arm P pivoted at V to open the contacts Q, Q<SP>1</SP>. When a single points lock and detector mechanism is provided to serve both points tongues the rods A and B enter that mechanism to operate an electric switch similar to that shown in Fig. 3.
