Classes 97(1) and 98(1) Optical justification of the line images produced from an original by a lens system is effected by a pair of wedge prisms rotatable about axes parallel to their vertices and perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens sytem, the prisms being rotated simultaneously in opposite directions by means controlled as a function of the length of the line to be justified, the rotation of the prisms also ensuring correct page-setting. As shown in Fig. 1 the prisms P1, P2, located in the collimated or substantially collimated beam between the two objectives O1 02 are jointly rotatable in opposite directions according to the position C, J, L, of the variable and of the line of type to be copied so that the image of such end C, J or L falls at a point J1 while the image of the fixed end A of the line falls at the point A1. As shown in Fig. 4 the prisms P1 P2 are rotatable about axis passing through the axis of the lenses O1, 02 by engagement of levers 3, 4 connected thereto with pins 5, 6 pressed by springs against screws 7, 8 engaging oppositely directed threads 13, 14 on a shaft 15. The pins 5, 6 are guided in dovetail slides to move parallel to the axis of the shaft 15 rotation of which rotates the prisms in opposite directions. The shaft 15 is driven by a shaft 20 rotated by a further shaft which turns a sighting device acording to the length of the line to be justified. To vary the magnification of the lens sytem O1, O2 the lens O is mounted on a plate 28 sliding on a guide 29 under the action of a gear 37 engaging a rack 39 connected to the plate 28. The pivots of the prisms P1, P2, the objective 02 are carried by a plate 31 similarly sliding on guide 29 and connected to a follower 40 engaging a cam 38 on the same shaft as the gear 37 rotation of which therefore moves the lenses O1, O2 simultaneously to vary the magnification while maintaining the image plane stationary, the prisms P1, P2 being simultaneously moved to maintain their adjustment.
