Abstract

Butadiene with lesser amount but not less than 10 per cent of its weight of a copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated compound is polymerized in aqueous dispersion in a stirred closed vessel until 60-90 per cent by weight of the monomeric mixture has been converted to copolymer, additional monomeric monoethylenically unsaturated material copolymerizable with the residual monomers is then added in such amount that there is present a greater proportion by weight of monomeric monoethylenically unsaturated material than polyolefinic monomer and polymerization is continued to completion. Suitable vinylidene monomers are styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl carbazole, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methacrylamide, methacrylic acid, and methyl a -chloroacrylate. The products are similar to a mixture of a rubbery copolymer of butadiene and for example styrene with a resinous copolymer of styrene and butadiene, and are useful for reinforcing natural rubber, compositions with rubber preferably contain 30-40 parts by weight per 100 parts of natural rubber. In Example (1) details are given of a specific vulcanization recipe for such a composition containing natural rubber. The amounts of monomers added in the first and second stages are preferably chosen so that the final product contains 40 to 95 per cent by weight of resinous copolymer chains and correspondingly 60 to 5 per cent by weight of rubbery copolymer chains. 0.05 to 1 per cent based on the monomer weight of a polymerization modifier is preferably added either wholly in the first stage or part in the second stage, examples being di (sec. butyl) disulphide, di (2-methyl butyl) disulphide, dialkyl xanthogen disulphides, diortho dinitrophenyl disulphide and dodecyl mercaptan. One or more emulsifying agents are also added either wholly in the first stage or part in the second stage, examples being sodium lauryl, oleyl and cetyl sulphates, sodium salts of sulphonated castor oil or sulphonated or sulphated methyl oleate, sodium oleate, palmitate or stearate and the hydrogenated or dehydrogenated rosin acid soaps. Catalysts include hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, cumene hydroperoxide and benzoyl peroxide, with the latter two a heavy metal salt and sorbose or fructose may be added. Water-soluble peroxide catalysts can be used at 30-60 DEG C. and redox catalysts at lower temperatures down to 5 DEG C. At temperatures below 0 DEG C. a compound such as methanol must be added to prevent freezing.
