Abstract

The invention comprises silyl ethers produced by reacting a dihydric alcohol of the formula: R1R2C(OH)C(OH)R3R4 where R1 and R3 are hydrogen or an alkyl group of not more than 6 carbon atoms or an aryl group of 6 carbon atoms and R2 and R4 are alkyl groups of not more than 3 carbon atoms and a silane of the formula: RaR1bR11cSiX4-a-b-c where R, R1 and R11 are alkyl, alkenyl or aryl groups of not more than 12 carbon atoms, a, b and c are 0, 1, 2 or 3, a + b + c equals 2 or 3 and X is a halogen or an alkoxy group derived from an alcohol of lower boiling point than the dihydric alcohol. The invention also comprises silicone gums compounded with 20 to 55 parts of a silica having a particle size not greater than 25 millimicrons and a specific surface of at least 150 square metres per gram per 100 parts of gum and 1 to 10 per cent of the compounded gum of one of the above compounds as an additive to render the composition workable after appreciable lengths of time. The preparation of the additive may be effected in an organic solvent, e.g. benzene dioxane, and preferably in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor, e.g. pyridine or triethylamine. The examples describe the preparation of (1) (tetramethyl ethylene dioxy) dimethyl silane from Me2SiCl2 and pinacol; (2) (tetramethyl ethylene dioxy) diethyl silane from Et2SiCl2 and pinacol; (3) (tetramethyl ethylene dioxy) methyl phenyl silane from MePhSiCl2 and pinacol; (4) pinacol bis-trimethyl silyl ether from Me3SiCl and pinacol; (5) pinacol mono-trimethyl sibyl ether using less Me3SiCl; (6) (1,2-dimethyl-1,2-diethylethylene dioxy) dimethyl silane from Me2SiCl2 and 3,4-dimethyl hexan-3,4-diol. These compounds are mixed with a dimethyl polysiloxane gum having a Me/Si ratio of 2 : 1 and a viscosity of 1.7 X 107 centistokes at 20 DEG C., together with a silica known under the Registered Trade Mark "Aerosil" and a benzoyl peroxide/polysiloxane oil paste, and tests are carried out after curing.
