Abstract

800,486. Cleaning condensers. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES, Ltd. Dec. 6, 1956 [Dec. 13, 1955], No. 37310/56. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XIII] In a condenser for gaseous fluids which condense to the solid state and comprising a vertically-disposed shell 1 having a cross-section in the shape of a plurality of abutting, generally circular, equal-radius segments 1a, 1b each greater than a semi-circle and having a centre spacing equal to approximately the radius of the segments multiplied by #2, a scraper blade of lenticular cross-sectional shape is disposed vertically and concentrically within each segment, there being means for mounting the scrapers in angular relationship of about 90 degrees to each other. There are means for simultaneously rotating the scrapers in the same direction, the scrapers being effective during such rotation to collectively scrape all the inside surfaces of the shell and all the vertical surfaces of each other, means for directing gaseous fluid from which solid is to be condensed vertically lengthwise in the shell on all sides of the scrapers, and means such as a cylindrical trap 14 for receiving condensed solid removed and falling from the scraped surfaces. As shown, the scrapers 7, 8 are secured on shafts 5, 6 journalled in a bearing plate 9 and carrying gears 10, 11 both of which mesh with a driving gear 12 mounted on a shaft 13. Each scraper comprises three cast sections 7c, Fig. 7, having central passages 38 to receive the shaft on which the scraper is mounted, and closed, cored passages 39 which serve to reduce the weight of the scraper. Openings 7a, 7b and 8a, 8b are provided in the scrapers to allow fluid from the inlet conduit 15 to pass downwardly through the condenser and on all sides of the rotating scrapers. In a modification, the leading faces of the scrapers are provided with curved recesses 42a, Fig. 6, to reduce any tendency to crush the condensed material instead of scraping that material.
