Abstract
800,460. Motor vehicles. EIMCO CORPORATION. Feb. 14, 1956 [April 1, 1955], No. 4600/56. Classes 79(1), 79(2), 79(3), and 79(4) In a vehicle with ground-engaging units comprising paired lateral frames carrying ground-engaging means a motor is mounted on the vehicle body, disposed between the body and a ground-engaging unit and drivably connected to drive transmission means housed on the body, and one end of each frame is pivoted to one end of the body and the other end of each frame is releasably connected to the other end of the body. As shown, the invention is applied to an endless track vehicle carrying a material handling device such as an overhead discharge bucket structure. The vehicle frame comprises a unitary casting with transverse portions 20, 22 interconnected by a narrow portion 24. Mounted on both sides of the portion 24 are compressed air motors 76, 78. Each motor drives a pinion 72 meshing with an idler gear 68 in the portion 24. The gear 68 drives a gear 66 on a shaft 58 which is connected by a gear pair 54, 56 to a shaft 46 connected to a gear pair 42, 44 to a shaft 32 projecting from the portion 22 and carrying a track driving sprocket 100.. Each track frame comprises interconnected longitudinal members 88, 90, the member 90 being pivoted at 98 on the shaft 32 and the member 88 being connected to an arm 102 pivoted at 104 to the vehicle frame concentrically with the shaft 32. At their forward ends the members 88, 90 slidably carry track tensioning sprockets 94, and a bracket 128 is secured to each member 88. Supported in trunnion bearings in each bracket 128 is a boss 134, a clearance A being provided to permit axial movement of the trunnions in the bracket. Each boss 134 receives a cylindrical end of a beam 86 having a bore 114 adapted to receive a pin 116 also engaging bores 118, 120 in the portion 20, whereby the track frames can pivot about the shafts 32 in unison, the pins being detachably secured by bolted flanges 122 to the portion 20 to permit the vehicle frame taking up the position shown in Fig. 9 to facilitate inspection of the transmission between the motors and the sprockets. The motors 76, 78 may be replaced by electric motors, and the invention may be applied to wheeled vehicles. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 751,620.
