A thermionic-cathode thyratron having a filling of alkali metal such as caesium has the control grid G entirely covered with a non-conductor B such as sintered corundum (Al 2 O 3 ), zirconia, or beryllia, so as to reduce grid emission from absorbed metal. In a modification, the inner edge of the aperture in the grid is left uncoated. The leads and supports for the grid may also be covered with the non-conductor.
