Abstract

Halogenated aryl silanes are prepared by reacting (a) a polyhalo compound of the general formula <FORM:0800280/IV (a)/1> wherein Y is chlorine, bromine or iodine, each X is chlorine, fluorine or a perfluoroalkyl radical, and m is an integer of from 1 to 5, with (2) a silane of the general formula RaHbSiCl4-a-b, wherein R is phenyl, methyl, ethyl or propyl, a is 0, 1 or 2, b is 1 or 2 and a+b does not exceed 3, at a temperature of from 400 DEG to 650 DEG C. and a pressure of from atmospheric to 50 lbs./sq. inch, none of the reactants being in the condensed phase. Suitable polyhalo compounds are o-, m- and p-chloro (tri-fluoromethyl) benzenes, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, 2,4- and 3,4-dichloro (trifluoromethyl) benzenes, p-bromo (trifluoromethyl) benzene, pentachlorodiphenyl iodide, hexachlorobenzene, 1-chloro-3,5-bis (trifluoromethyl) benzene, dichlorobenzenes, hexachlorodiphenyl, chlorodifluorobenzenes, chlorofluoro-(trifluoromethyl) benzene, perfluorodecylchlorobromofluorobenzene, isdodifluoro (trifluoromethyl)-diphenyl and 1,3 - di - pentafluoroethyl 2,4-difluorobenzene. Preferred contact times for the reaction are 1 to 30 seconds, and the reaction may be effected by passing the compounds through a heated tube. The examples describe the preparation of: (1) (m-CF3,C6H) Si(CH3)Cl2; (2) (m-CF3C6H4)SiCl3; (3) (p-CF3C6H4)Si(CH3)Cl2; (4) a mixture of mono-and di-chlorophenyl trichlorosilane; (5) CF3(Cl)C6H3Si(CH3)Cl2; (6) CF3(Cl)C6H3Si(CH3)Cl2 (a different isomer from (5)); (7) o-trifluoromethylphenylmethyldichlorisilane; (8) (m-CF3C6H4)Si(CH3)2Cl; (9) di - (p - trifluoromethylphenyl)dichlorosilane; (10) (pentachlorodiphenyl)phenyldichlorosilane; (11) pentachlorophenylmethyldichlorosilane; (12) 3,5-bis-(trifluoromethyl)phenylmethyldichlorosilane.
