Abstract
800,143. Moulding-processes. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. Sept. 14, 1956 [Sept. 14, 1955], No. 26359/55. Class 83(1). Moulds or cores are made by forming from a refractory, e.g. zircon, which is moistened with an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium silicate, hardening by the action of CO 2 , applying to the hardened-mould or core acidhydrolysed ethyl silicate dissolved in an inflammable solvent whereby the solution is absorbed in the structure, and burning-off the solvent. The solvent may be ethyl alcohol, acetone, or iso-propyl alcohol, and there may be repeated applications of the hydrolysed ethyl silicate solution with subsequent burning- off of the solvent, followed by firing of the mould and thereafter further application of the solution and burning-off of the solvent. The silicate solution for damping the refractory may contain ammonia, up to 3 per cent by weight, to accelerate hardening, and alternatively, or in addition thereto may also include glycerol, up to 5 per cent, and sugars such as glucose and molasses, up to 10 per cent, or resins (soluble or miscible in the silicate solution), 1+3 per cent. The invention may be applied to the lost-wax-process, the pattern being given an initial coating of fine refractory, and dusted with a coarse refractory before investment. The burning-off of the solvent then serves to remove the wax &c. pattern, final traces being removed by firing at 700-1000‹ C. Specification 770,527 is referred to.
