Abstract
An intensifying screen is made by dispersing a fluorescent material in a chlorosulphonated addition polymer of an olefin containing 1 or 2 double bonds and not more than 5 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene. Suitable polymers are described in Specifications 542,414 and 591,058, [both in Group IV]. The fluorescent substance may be barium sulphate/lead sulphate mixed crystals, calcium tungstate or zinc sulphide. The screen layers may be prepared by dispersing the fluorescent particles in an organic solvent, if necessary with the aid of a dispersing agent such as tetraisopropyl titanate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and mixtures of the latter with stearic acid, and then mixing the dispersion with the polymer, which may itself be dispersed in the same or a different organic solvent. The dispersions of fluorescent material in polymer may contain also vulcanizing agents such as magnesium oxide, lead oxide and organic amines, accelerators such as zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and 2-mercapto-imidazoline, plasticisers such as dioctylphthalate and resins such as coumarone-indene resins and resins of the formula <FORM:0800119/IV (a)/1> where R is <FORM:0800119/IV (a)/2> and R1 is p-phenylene.
