Abstract

799,826. Treating sewage and waste effluents. EASTERN GAS BOARD, and WEDGWOOD, P. April 23, 1956 [March 8, 1955], No. 6857/55. Class 111. [Also in Group XII] Sewage is fed to a tank 6, Fig. 1, at 16 and pumped thence to a tank 11 whence it flows down an open tower 1, provided with bacterially-activated surfaces 17a, Fig. 3, back into the tank. Some of the liquid overflows from tank 6 to a second tank 7, whence it is pumped to a tank 12 for flow down a second open tower 2 back into tank 7. Three further successive sets of tanks and open towers are provided, the total number depending upon the degree of purification desired. Selected strains of bacteria may be introduced into one or more of the towers. Humus sludge settling in the lower tanks (preferably of inverted conical shape) is removed by hydrostatic head. Reagents may be added (e.g., ammonium phosphate when phenols are present). The #H value in any tower may be controlled by addition of acid or alkali. The towers may be illuminated. They may be heated, e.g. by methane from digestion of the sludge. Clean water may be added at 30 to compensate for water lost by evaporation. The towers have a skeleton framework to admit daylight and the slats 17a may be replaced by spaced columns of horizontal bars, each bar having a flat top with a central longitudinal trough and having a triangular cross-section so that liquid drips from the lower edge into the trough of the bar beneath.
