Abstract

Hydrocarbon conversion reactions are carried out in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of a mechanical mixture of particles of (a) a component containing platinum deposited on an inert porous support and (b) an acidic component having a catalytic cracking activity (see Group III). Petroleum fractions boiling in the range 60-450 DEG F. may be reformed at 700-1000 DEG F. under a hydrogen pressure of 100-1000 lbs. per square inch gauge. Tests are described in which (a) n-hexane is isomerized to iso-hexane at 370 DEG C.; (b) methyl-cyclopentane is aromatized to benzene at 510 DEG C.; (c) n-hexane at 448 DEG C. yields isohexane and benzene; (d) cetane is hydrocracked at 700 DEG F., yielding products boiling in the gasoline range.ALSO:A catalyst suitable for use in hydrocarbon conversion reactions consists essentially of a mechanical mixture of particles of (a) a component containing platinum, e.g. 0.1-2 per cent by weight, deposited on an inert porous support; and (b) an acidic component having a catalytic cracking activity. Suitable inert supports for the platinum are silica gel, alumina gel, natural clays, bauxite, pumice stone, kaolin, charcoal, kieselguhr, porous glass, magnesia, asbestos, coke and magnesium sulphate. The acid cracking component may be silica-alumina, silica-magnesia, silica-zorconia, silica-thoria, silica-beryllia, silica-titania, silica-alumina - magnesia, silica - alumina - zorconia, silica - alumina - thoria, silica - alumina - titania, silica - alumina - beryllia, halogenated silicon or alumina, or aluminium halides. If the particles of the catalyst components differ in size, they may be separated after use by sieving, flotation, or air blowing, the cracking component being regenerated with an oxygen-containing gas at 1000-1400 DEG F. for 10 minutes to 1 hour, and the platinum-containing component with hydrogen at 900-1100 DEG F. for 1-5 hours, the two components being recombined and used again. Alternatively, when the platinum component is supported on a carbonaceous base, this component may be burnt in air, platinum dissolved from the ash by treatment with aqua regia, and the acid solution used to impregnate the carbonaceous carrier, which is thereafter reduced in hydrogen. Halogenated alumina, when used as the cracking component, may be regenerated by treatment with halogen, halogen acid, or a halide salt. The catalyst are especially suitable for reforming naphthas, gasoline, or kerosene (see Group IV (b) and for hydrocracking gas oils. Hydrocracking may take place at 500-750 DEG F. under a hydrogen pressure of 100-5000 lb. per sq. inch gauge.
