Abstract

799,439. Button-hole marking machines. FOISTER, CLAY & WARD, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1956 [Dec. 19, 1955], No. 36328/55. Class 112 'The invention relates to button and button-hole position marking machines comprising, in combination, a stationary longitudinally slotted base bar to support the garment fronts to be marked, a series of spaced lower markers having heads which are presented to one garment front through the slot in the base, an upper marker carriage in the form of a bar slotted longitudinally which is arranged above and is movable by a treadle on vertical steel rods towards and away from the base bar against and under a biasing influence, a series of spaced upper markers formed by pencil-like crayon holders disposed in axial alignment with the lower markers together with means for rotating the upper markers when they press upon the garment front and for rotating the lower markers by means of the treadle. According to the invention, appropriate upper markers and opposing lower markers are mounted at equally spaced points upon carriers which are longitudinally extensible and contractible so as to effect adjustment of the markers collectively and to the same extents, the carriers being operable together by a common actuating member readily accessible to the operator. In the machine shown, Fig. 1, a lazy tongs system A consisting of five pairs of centrally pivoted bars 3, is mounted on the top of a longitudinally slotted bar 2 forming the upper marker carriage. The outer extremities of the bars 3 at the left hand end are articulated at 4, 5 to a pair of arms 6, 7 which are mounted to swivel upon a fixed upper marker 8 secured to the bar 2. A second fixed upper marker 9 pivotally carries a compensating lever 10 to the arm 10a of which are attached the ends of return spring 11 connected at their other ends to extensions 3a of appropriate bars 3. A second pair of tension spring 12 are connected between the extension 3a and extensions 3b of further bars. A further fixed upper marker 13 is also secured to the bar 2. The three fixed upper markers 8, 9, 13 are used to mark the button positions on the ribbed waist of a knitted garment such as a lumber jacket. At the pivotal point 14 of each of the pair of bars 3 one of a series of five upper markers 15 is mounted. The upper markers 15 have helixes at their upper ends to cause the markers to rotate when the markers come into contact with the garment or lower markers. Arms 17, 18 pivoted to the outer ends 3c of the bars 3 at the right hand end are connected together and carry a gauge pin 19. The upper end of the pin 19 extends through a slot 20a in a bar 20 attached at its left hand end to one of the markers 15. By adjustment of the pin 19 along the slot 20a the initial spacing of the markers 15 and pin 19 may be determined. This spacing can be varied for garments of different sizes. Three fixed lower markers 21, 22 and 23 are mounted, in axial alignment with corresponding fixed upper markers 8, 9 and 13, on a longitudinally slotted horizontal platform 24 which is mounted below the slotted base bar 26. Five further lower markers 27 are mounted on a lazy tongs system B of bars 28 similar to the bars 3 of system A. The lazy tongs system B are controlled by pairs of tension springs 29 and 30 associated with a compensating lever 31. Each of the five lower markers 27 has attached to its underside a sprocket wheel 32, Fig. 3, rotatably mounted in a bearing sleeve 34 which is free to slide in the slot 24a. The sprocket wheels 32 mesh with a spring loaded chain 36, Fig. 1, which is connected with the horizontal pull-bar 37 by a cable 38. The right hand end of the straight slotted bar 20 and the same end of the lazy tongs B are connected by cables 40, 41 to an auxiliary treadle. The upper marker carriage 2 is connected by vertical steel rods 44 with the pull bar 37 which is operated by the main treadle. The rods 44 are slidable in tubes 25 against the action of springs 46. The machine is principally intended for use with machines wherein the marks applied to the garment fronts are made by wax which is invisible in ordinary light but which glows in ultraviolet light.
