Abstract

799,185. Spinning and finishing yarns. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. May 29, 1956 [May 31, 1955], No. 15559/55. Class 120(3) Continuous filaments e.g. yarns or bundles (including filament waste), of cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate and butyrate, cellulose ethers such as ethyl and benzyl cellulose, regenerated cellulose, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyaminocaproic acid, polyaminotriazoles, polyaminonitrile, or polyethylene terephthalate are continuously formed into a semblance of staple fibre yarn by passing the filaments through a stream of fluid, e.g. compressed air, which is sufficiently turbulent to whip about and break individual filaments at intervals along their lengths, withdrawing the filaments from the stream at a speed less than that at which they are fed thereto and collecting them as a twisted or untwisted textile product. The stream, as may issue from a jet member, may be directed against a dispersing surface e.g. a baffle plate and the filaments may pass over roughened surfaces e.g. in the interior passage of the jet and/or on the baffle, to encourage the filament breakage. The intensity of the bulking of the product may be controlled by varying the ratio between the speeds of supply and withdrawal of the filaments to and from the stream, and an untwisted product may be drafted, optionally with intermediate operations for further severance of the filaments therein. The yarns produced, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), comprise varying proportions of closed and open loops, and protruding and entrapped fibre ends. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn 8, draw from a package 9 and passed twice around a roller 7 by means of guides 12, is passed through an air jet 13 in the outlet nozzle of which is an annular insert of abrasive material e.g. emery or carborundum: the emerging yarn 15 impinges on a baffle 16, which may be cut in the manner of a file, and is withdrawn by roller 17 for delivery to the ballon guide 18 of a ring-spinning unit 19 by which it is twisted and wound into a package 21. In the apparatus of Fig. 3 comprising a compound roller 33 having portions 34 and 35 of different diameters, yarn 8 passes around the portion 35 and twice through the nip between portion 35 and roller 32, thence to the inlet of the unit 13, the yarn 15 impinges on a plate 38, is withdrawn through the nip between the portion 34 and a resilient surfaced presser roll 36, is directed via a guide 37 beneath and in contact with the portion 34 then over and in contact with the roller 32, thence to a ring spinning unit. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a bundle is drawn from and the filaments intertwisted by a rotating package and the product collected from the jet 13 and baffle 38 is wound into a cheese without further twist. As shown in Fig. 5, yarns 8 are drawn from stationary packages 51 one (or more) of which may comprise waste yarn and is replaced manually: the product 15 is drafted between rollers 52 and 53, twisted by a ring-spinning device 56 and collected on a package 57 as a yarn or roving. Specifications 418,226, 665,252, 732,929, 767,835, 790,911 and 793,044 are referred to.
