Abstract

Nitration products of alginic acid or esters of alginic acid, in which the free hydroxyl groups of the mannuronic unit are wholly or partly replaced by nitrate groups, are obtained by reacting fuming nitric acid with alginic acid, a metal alginate such as sodium alginate, a partially esterified alginic acid in which up to a quarter of the hydroxyl groups are esterified with a lower fatty acid such as acetic acid, or with an ester of alginic acid in which the carboxyl groups of the mannuronic unit are esterified with an alkylene oxide such as ethylene oxide. Improved nitration derivatives are formed by employing nitric acid from a former nitration in admixture with a further quantity of fuming nitric acid.ALSO:An adhesive, which adheres to gelatine and cellulose ester films and is particularly suitable for binding the gelatine-silver-halide layer of a photographic film or the coloured hardened gelatine layer of a light-filter to its cellulose-ester support, comprises a solution, in a volatile solvent, of gelatine and a nitration product of either alginic acid or a fatty acid partial ester of alginic acid, the weight ratio of the nitration product to the gelatine being between 9 : 1 and 1 : 9, preferably 2 : 8. The carboxyl group of the mannuronic part of the alginic acid may be esterified with an alcohol or an alkylene oxide, e.g., ethylene oxide. The nitration product may contain nitrate and acetate groups in the ratio 3 : 1. The adhesive may be prepared by mixing gelatine, alginic acid nitrate or its hydroxyethyl ester, ethylene chlorhydrin, acetone, ethanol, hydrochloric or trichloroacetic acid, and water. Methylene chloride and glycol diacetate may be added. Finely divided silver may also be added, to prevent halation.
