Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises an organo-polysiloxane of the unit formula RnSiO 4-n/2 in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical and n is 1, 2 or 3, and from 0.01 to per cent by weight of a 1,11 - bis - (trialkylsilyl) ferrocene in which the alkyl radicals contain less than 6 carbon atoms per radical. Examples illustrate the stabilizing of liquid trimethyl end-blocked dimethylpolysiloxane, diethylsiloxane, and copolymers of dimethylsiloxane with a ,a ,a -trifluorotolylmethylsiloxane, with 1,11-bis-(trimethylsilyl)-, 1,11 - bis - (tripropylsilyl) -, 1,11 - bis - (ethyldimethylsilyl)- and 1-trimethylsilyl-11-triethylsilyl-ferrocene.ALSO:The invention comprises the compounds 1,11-bis-(trialkylsilyl) ferrocenes in which the alkyl groups contain less than 6 carbon atoms, and also stabilized organosiloxanes containing 0.01 to 3 per cent by weight of these compounds. They may be prepared by reacting disodioferrocene with the trialkyl chlorosilane, preferably in an inert solvent such as petroleum ether. The siloxanes which may be stabilized are those having the general unit formula <FORM:0799067/IV (a)/1> where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical and n is from 1 to 3, and they may be liquids, resins or elastomers. The examples describe the preparation of 1,11-bis - (trimethylsilyl), (tripropylsilyl) - and (ethyldimethylsilyl) - ferrocenes and 1 - trimethylsilyl - 11 - triethylsilyl ferrocene; and the trimethyl derivative is used for stabilizing a liquid trimethyl end-blocked dimethylpolysiloxane, a liquid diethylsiloxane, methylvinyl siloxane elastomers, methylphenylsiloxane resins and liquid copolymers of dimethylsiloxane and a ,a ,a -trifluorotolylmethylsiloxane.
