Abstract
A fuel oil composition, which has colour stability and little tendency to form sediment, comprises a distillate fuel oil and a minor proportion of an aliphatic amine-formaldehyde condensation product having the formula: <FORM:0798062/III/1> wherein n is an integer between 1 and 6, or having the formula (RN = CH2), wherein R is a normal aliphatic monovalent hydrocarbon radicle containing 8-18 carbon atoms. The fuel oil may be a straight-run, or thermally or catalytically cracked petroleum distillate, or a mixture of these, boiling within the range 300-750 DEG F. A list of amines, from which the condensation products may be prepared, is given. The formaldehyde may be reacted with the amine in the form of aqueous formalin solutions, paraformaldehyde or trioxymethylene. The fuel oil composition may contain additional ingredients such as foam inhibitors (e.g. silicones), anti-rust agents (e.g. metal sulphonates) and ignition and burning quality improvers (e.g. dinitropropane or amyl nitrate). In the examples, fuel oil compositions are described which contain a condensation product of formaldehyde with tert.-butylamine, tert.-octylamine or the amines known under the Trade names "Alkylamine 81," "Alkylamine JM," "Armeen C," "Armeen S," or "Armeen T" (the word "Armeen" is a Registered Trade Mark). For comparison purposes fuel oil compositions are described which contain a condensation product of "Alkylamine JM" with acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, furfural, glyoxal or salicylaldehyde.
