Abstract
797,199. Making electric cables; rolling; skelping. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 21, 1956 [Sept. 22, 1955], No. 27104/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for indenting one or both edges of metal strip 3, Fig. 3, comprises a pair of rolls 8, 9, one of which has circumferential grooves 27 for one or both margins of the strip, having opposed projections and recesses in the annular side walls. The indentations increase the effective thickness of the edges to prevent over-riding during subsequent forming of the strip into a tube. In apparatus for skelping the strip 3 round a conductor 1 and spaced insulators 2 an upper roll 8 has an annular recess 15 to permit the longitudinal passage of the conductor 1 and has convex side faces 11 which effect initial transverse shaping of the strip. The grooves 27 are formed between the side faces 11 and discs 24 attached by bolts 31 to the roll. The projections comprise a ring of balls 28 set in cylindrical recesses 29 in the plates 24 and arranged opposite a ring of recesses 23, Fig. 7, milled in the side faces 11. In forming a cable the apparatus may be preceded by a pair of skelping rolls to effect the initial transverse shaping.
