Abstract

797,112. Explosive compositions: blasting. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. Oct. 15, 1956 [Jan. 4, 1956], No. 276/56. Classes 9(2) and 68(1) An ammonium nitrate blasting explosive composition of high power, substantially oxygen balanced characteristics and capable of being consolidated to a bulk density greater than one and which can be initiated by a priming composition at said bulk density comprises ammonium nitrate of an average particle size not less than that of an ammonium nitrate wherein the powder grains are of the following size distribution by weighthaving a continuous surface coating of a water resistant liquefiable non-explosive combustible material containing combined carbon and hydrogen in amount not appreciably exceeding that required for the available oxygen in the composition and not less than 3 per cent on the weight of the composition and, except for the ammonium nitrate, is free from explosive constituents. Specified water resistant liquefiable combustible materials include mineral jelly, paraffin wax and bitumen. Additionally the composition may include an oxidizable metal powder (e.g. aluminium) and a non-explosive organic sensitizing agent, (e.g. dinitrotoluene). The composition may be prepared in a steam heated mixer. The invention also includes a method of winning coal, rock, metal or the like in opencast working, quarrying or strip mining in the presence of water in which the above composition is introduced into a substantially vertical borehole of at least 5 inches in diameter and initiating the explosive composition with a priming composition. The composition may be packed into chipboard or cardboard cylinders of the appropriate diameter or into rupturable paper bags which can be burst under pressure so that the contents occupy the whole cross section of the borehole. In an example 92 parts by weight of ammonium nitrate of the specified grist size. and 4 parts by weight of powdered aluminium are mixed in a steam heated mixer and 4 parts by weight of mineral jelly added. The mixture is packed into waxed chipboard cylinders of 5 inches external diameter, and primed with a gelignite cartridge fired by an aluminium-tetryl detonator.
