Abstract

Olefin polymerization catalysts comprise a mixture of a hydride of a metal of Group I (A) or II (A), a halide of a metal of Group II (A) or III (B), and another metal compound. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylenes, butadiene, isoprene, styrene and mixtures. Specified metal hydrides are those of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium and complex metal hydrides such as lithium aluminium hydride, while specified metal halides are the chlorides and bromides of aluminium, beryllium and magnesium. Specified other metal compounds are iron - 2 - chloride, iron - 3 - bromide, cobalt chloride, nickel bromide, manganese-2-chloride, chromium-3-chloride, chromyl chloride, halides of molybdenum or tungsten, vanadium-4-chloride, vanadium oxychloride, halides or niobium and tantalum, titanium-4-chloride, titanium - 3 - chloride, zirconium - 3 - chloride, zirconium - 4 - bromide, hafnium - 4 - chloride, copper - 2 - chloride, iron - 3 - thiocyanate, titanic acid esters, organic metal compounds, e.g. acetylacetonates, and the oxides of the above metals. The proportion of other metal compound may vary from 3 : 1 to 1 : 3 to the metal hydride. German Specification 874,215 is referred to.ALSO:Olefin hydrocarbons are polymerized in the presence of a mixture of a hydride of a metal of Group IA or IIA, a halide of a metal of IIA or IIIB and another metal compound. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylenes, butadiene, isoprene, styrene and mixtures. Specified metal hydrides are those of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium and complex metal hydrides such as lithium aluminium hydride, while specified metal halides are the chlorides and bromides of aluminium, beryllium and magnesium. Specified other metal compounds are iron-2-chloride, iron-3-bromide, cobalt chloride, nickel bromide, manganese-2-chloride, chromium-3-chloride, chromyl chloride, halides of molybdenum or tungsten, vanadium-4-chloride, vanadium oxychloride, halides of niobium and tantalum, titanium - 4 - chloride, titanium - 3 - chloride, zirconium - 3 - chloride, zirconium-4 - bromide, hafnium - 4 - chloride, copper - 2-chloride, iron - 3 t thiocyanate, titanic acid esters, organic metal compounds, e.g. acetylacetonates, and the oxides of the above metals. The proportion of other metal compound may vary from 3 : 1 to 1 : 3 to the metal hydride. The polymerization is preferably carried out in the presence of inert organic liquids such as petroleum ether, gasoline fractions, Diesel oil, hexane, octane, cyclohexane, and benzene, preferably at between 20 and 3000 atmospheres pressure and a temperature between 15 DEG and 250 DEG C.
