Abstract

Condensation products are obtained by reacting a carbohydrate or a desoxy or o -carboxy derivative of a simple sugar, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, with a non-olefinic aromatic or halo-aromatic hydrocarbon. Temperatures are about - 40 DEG to + 150 DEG C. Pressure may be atmospheric up to 100 atmos. or more, suitably the autogenous pressure generated. Mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are generally preferred but those with two or more aryl groups or condensed benzene rings are utilizable. The halo-hydrocarbons specified include those containing one or more F, Cl, Br, and I atoms. Carbohydrates include simple and compound sugars which are fully exemplified. The catalyst may be a metal halide or BF3, preferably AlCl3, AlBr3 or BF3, alone or modified with an alcohol, ether, nitro-hydrocarbon or other solvent. Hydrogen halide may be present as a promoter. The products are analogous with those of Specification 787,531 and may be sulphonated, sulphated or nitrated to give detergents or explosives. Other uses of the products are as surface coatings, for producing resins, as gelling agents, and plasticizers. Thus, a reaction product of toluene and fructose gels benzene and pentane. In examples: (1) toluene, d-glucose, and AlCl3 are reacted at 0 DEG C. while passing HCl, the products comprising diaryl hydrocarbons and 1,1-di-(p-tolyl)-desoxy-D-glucitol; (2) d-glucose and benzene similarly yield 1,1-diphenyl-desoxy-D-glucitol; (3) chlorbenzene gives 1,1-di-(4-chlorphenyl)-desoxy-D-glucitol.
