Abstract
796,492. Washing vehicle wheels. WATSON, H. K. Oct. 12, 1955 [Oct. 12, 1954; Dec. 29, 1954], Nos. 29425/54 and 37567/54. Class 138(1). Apparatus for cleaning twintyred driving wheels of powered vehicles, comprises a pair of rollers 1, 2, Fig. 2, arranged to support the driving wheels W of a vehicle between them, means 5, 6, to control the rotation of at least one of the rollers to enable the rotation of the driving wheels to move the vehicle into position on the rollers or to rotate the rollers and nozzles 8 connectable to a liquid supply and so dispersed as to direct liquid jets between the gaps of thetwin tyres of whee ls supported by the rollers. The vehicle is driven up ramps 19, Fig. 1, so that the rear driving wheels W, Fig. 2, of the vehicle are supported between two rollers 1, 2 carried by bearings 3 in a frame 4. The rollers 1, 2 are freely rotatable but the roller 2, Figs. 2 and 3 has a ratchet wheel 5 secured thereon for engagement by a pawl 6, pivoted at 7 on the frame 4, so that the roller 2 may be locked to allow the vehicle to be driven on or off the apparatus. Water under pressure is supplied through a valve 10 and pipe line 9 to nozzles 8 between the rollers. The valve 10 has a control arm 11 connected by a link 12 with a hand lever 13 secured to a rock shaft 14 mounted in the frame 4. The pawl 6 has an extension 18, the weight of which is arranged to engage the pawl 6 with the ratchet wheel 5, under gravity. A trip arm 17, Fig. 3, on the shaft 14 and movable between stops 15, 16, Fig. 2, is arranged to engage the extension 18 to free the pawl 6 from the ratchet wheel, when the valve 10 is opened. The vehicle wheels W are spun by the vehicle engine when the roller 2 is free and the valve 10 is open and dirt is removed from the wheels by centrifugal action in addition to the action of the jets. If desired the front wheels be supported by rollers driven from the rollers 1, 2. By having front and rear series of rollers the apparatus may be used for vehicles of different wheel bases. The water may be supplied from a supply main or from a pit into which water drains, a pump drawing water from the pit then being driven by the supporting rollers.
