Abstract

796,068. Wheel rims. KELSEY-HAYES CO. Oct. 27, 1955 [Dec. 29, 1954], No. 30823/55. Class 144 (2). A wheel rim comprises an endless annular member having an annular tyre bead seat 2 integral with an annular tyre retaining flange 4, and a mounting bead 5 which is formed by a portion 6 extending radially inwardly from the flange 4 and a frusto-conical return-bent portion 7 which has an end extension which abuts the bead seat 2 and is bent at a greater angle to the rim axis than the portion 7, the two portions 6, 7 presenting generally oppositely facing mounting surfaces for engagement with clamping and seating means to mount the rim on a wheel body. As shown, the rim is a unitary well-based member with the mounting bead 5 extending integrally from one of the retaining flanges 4. The return-bent portion 7 of the bead comprises a frusto-conical portion 9 for wedging engagement with a correspondingly surfaced clamp 28, the return-bent portion being extended to abut the bead seat 2 by a terminal portion which slopes at a greater angle to the rim axis than the portion 9. The radially extending portion 6 of the bead presents a radial surface 8 to engage a seating ring 25. In the arrangement shown, two such rims are mounted on a hollow-spoked wheel body 10 in a manner identical with that described in Specification 786,544 except that the seating rings 22, 25 for the inboard and outboard rims respectively are of angle section instead of inverted T-section.
