Abstract
796,023. Rotary dashpots. HOUDAILLE INDUSTRIES, Inc. Jan. 9, 1956 [Jan. 20, 1955], No. 716/56. Class 108(3) In a rotary dashpot of the type comprising vanes 19 dividing an annular chamber into a plurality of pairs of opposed working chambers 16, 17, in conjunction with fixed radiallydirected abutment members 24, the chambers of each pair being connected by passageways embodying flow restriction means 46, and by passageways leading outwardly through the cylinder wall to a relief valve 60 (Fig. 4). The ratio R2/r lies within the limits 1/40. L/r +.65 and 1/40. L/R +.25, where R1, R2, rand L are as shown in Fig. 1. Moreover R2/R1 lies within the limits .315 log 10 L/R1 + .34 and .315 log 10 L/R1 + .74, and R1/R lies within the limits .9 and .6. There are two vanes 19 and two members 24 resulting in two pairs of chambers 16, 17. The chambers 16, 17 are also connected by a one-way valve 60 (Fig. 4) permitting pressure relief from the chambers 16. A second valve 60a (Fig. 1) permits pressure relief in the reverse direction from the chambers 17. Retaining plugs 67 for the loading springs 64 of the valves 60, 60a, and further plugs 73, are of tin. The members 24 are held rigid with the outer casing 10 of the shock absorber, by means of plugs 22. Liquid in a reservoir 25 is urged by a spring-loaded piston 26 through passages 36 having check valves 37. The restriction means 46 is thermostatically controlled by a bimetallic element 57 adjustable at 55. The dashpot is for damping flutter of aircraft control surfaces. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 712,321.
