Abstract

A stable graphite suspension is made by dispersing finely-divided graphite in a plastic, sticky, aliphatic hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer having a molecular weight of at least 10,000, to form a mixture composed substantially wholly of carbon and hydrogen, milling the mixture between rotating rolls under high pressure to reduce the size of the graphite particles, and dissolving in a liquid hydrocarbon medium. The hydrocarbon medium may be a mixture of a lubricating oil and a volatile solvent, e.g. hexane or petroleum benzine. On heating the solution, the polymer depolymerizes and distils off together with the volatile solvent, leaving a graphite suspension which may be added to lubricating oils, diesel oils or gasoline; addition to a gasoline containing tetra-ethyl lead results in reduced deposition of lead in an engine. The graphite particles have an average size of less than 0.1 micron. Suitable polymers and copolymers are derived from isobutylene, ethylene, partially depolymerized rubber, butadiene, propylene, isoprene and n-butylene. In examples, polyisobutylene of molecular weight 60,000, and polyisoprene of molecular weight 300,000, are used; milling takes place between horizontal cylindrical rolls rotating at different speeds. Specification 535,293 is referred to.
