Abstract

795,892. Valve closure members. NU-WAY HEATING PLANTS, Ltd. Aug. 15, 1956 [Aug. 15, 1955; Oct. 22, 1955], Nos. 23400/55 and 30258/55. Class 135. In a flow controlling valve wherein a control member with a cylindrical portion having a peripheral groove of varying cross-section is adjustable within a body part, the cylindrical portion is formed as two interengaging relatively adjustable parts which co-operate to form the groove and can be adjusted to alter the cross-sectional area of a portion of the groove. Fig. 1 shows cylindrical parts 8a, 8b end-to-end within a body part 5 having a radial inlet 6 and an axial outlet 7. The groove 9 is formed by the flat end face of one of the parts 8b as shown and a chamfer of gradually increasing depth on the other part 8a. A smaller chamfer 13 which can be brought to register with any part of the larger chamfer is formed on the part 8b. The parts 8a, 8b are carried by coaxial stems 11, 12 provided at their ends remote from the parts 8a, 8b with means for retaining them in any desired relative angular setting. The groove 9 opens into a radial passage 10 which itself communicates directly or via an annular chamber 15 and radial ports 16 with an axial passage 14. Fig. 3 shows a control member with two portions 18a, 18b axially slidable as a unit through a hole or bore formed in a body part 17. The outer part 18a has a longitudinal V-shaped slot 20 which with the periphery of the inner part 18b forms the groove of varying cross-section. The inner part 18b has a helical groove 21 and is angularly adjustable relative to the part 18a to vary the cross-sectional area of a portion of the groove formed by the slot 20. The single groove 21 may be replaced by a munber of grooves or depressions which may be spaced longitudinally and/or circumferentially. A selected groove or depression may be brought into register with a selected portion of the slot in the outer part by angular and/or longitudinal adjustment of the inner part 18b relative to the outer part 18a.
