Abstract

Finely ground magnetic ore, e.g. Wolframite, Feberite, Columbite, Tantalite, Ilmenite, Cassiterite or Monazite or mixtures thereof, is mixed and agitated with a mineral acid, then washed and dried and subjected to magnetic separation. Hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acids of various strengths can be used, hot or cold. In one method 5 cwt. of minus 100 mesh ore is covered with 30 gallons of water in an acid proof vessel, 40 gallons of concentrated sulphuric acid are pumped in and the mixture is agitated for one hour. The liquor is drained and the residue is washed, dried and magnetically separated. In a modification the ore water and acid are mixed together, the rise in temperature and reaction providing sufficient agitation without mechanical stirring.
