Abstract
795,555. Musical boxes. DUNCAN, T. R. Oct. 24, 1955 [July 22, 1955], No. 30346/55. Class 88 (1). The comb 12 and the plucking disc 15 of a musical box are mounted on separate arms of a V-shaped metal base 14. The comb is stamped from sheet metal and is cast into arm 30 of the base. The stiffly pliable cellulose acetate plucking disc is driven by a crank 16 and a pinion 54 near the apex of the V. The disc is formed with flexible plucking fingers 23 disposed so as to provide inclined surfaces over which the teeth 18 of the comb can ride. The teeth 18 are turned over at 20 to engage the plucking fingers. A shrouded pinion 60 holds the disc so that the plucking fingers firmly pluck the teeth of the comb. The driving pinion 54 is rotatably mounted on the crank 16 and is driven by a freewheel device comprising ears 50 on the crank and shoulders 55 on the pinion. In a modified drive the crank 79, Fig. 12, is normal to the axis of the disc and the freewheel device comprises a coil spring 86 which at its two ends engages the pinion 54A and ears 86 on the crank. The base 14 is formed with a convex base 34, Fig. 8, so that it may be secured in close contact with the soundboard 11.
