Abstract
A pharmaceutical composition comprises a water-insoluble medicinal agent in an aqueous vehicle of viscosity between 15 and 80 centipoise at 25 DEG C. containing 0.1 to 1 per cent alkali metal salt of carboxymethylcellulose having a viscosity in 2 per cent aqueous solution of less than about 100 centipoises at 25 DEG C., and from 0.1 to 3 per cent of a hydrophilic polyvinyl compound, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol or mixtures thereof. The medicinal agent which may be coated at least in part with a phospholipid, e.g. lecithin, cephalin, as in Specification 669,709, may consist of milled or micronized particles or a mixture thereof, of size from 2 to 60 microns, and may be a steroid, e.g. progesterone, testosterone propionate, estradiol monobenzoate, sulphamerazine, sulphamethazine, cortisone acetate, hydrocortisone, hydrocortisone acetate, or an antibiotic, e.g. penicillin O, G and K, 2-chloroprocaine, procaine and N,N-dibenzylethylenediamine penicillin, complex aluminium salts of penicillin, aluminium salts of p-aminobenzene sulphamides, vitamins, e.g. riboflavin, barbiturates, e.g. phenobarbital, and salicylamide. The composition which may take the form of liquid oral preparations, ophthalmic preparations, sprays, lotions, or dry compositions suitable for extemporaneous preparation of injectable solutions, may contain a buffer, e.g. sodium citrate, to maintain the pH between 5 and 7, and a preservative, e.g. methyl, propyl or butyl parabens. Specification 787,912 also is referred to.
