Abstract

794,136. Vehicle power steering. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Nov. 23, 1955 [Nov. 23, 1954], No. 33603/55. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXIV] Power assistance is applied to a motor vehicle steering arrangement, the steering gear of which has a constant reduction ratio of about 1 : 14 to 1 : 16 within a range of about one-half turn of the steering wheel in each direction from the straight ahead position, but the gear has a progressive variation in ratio outside such range whereby the total steering-wheel movement is curtailed by about half a turn or more in each direction compared with the constant ratio in the middle ratio. As shown the steering gear has a worm 2 mounted on the steering column 1, the groove 14 of which has a constant conventional pitch over a rotational angle of about 180 degrees in either direction from the straight ahead position, the end portions of the groove having progressively increasing pitches. The groove 14 is engaged by a roller 13 on a pin 12 to which are pivoted an arm 5 and a link 6, the latter being also pivoted to a steering gear arm 4 carried by a spindle 7 in the gear box 3, and the spindle 7 being connected by a linkage (not shown) to the steerable wheels. The arm 5 of substantially the same length as and parallel to the arm 4 is carried by a pivot 8, connected to a block 10 being slidable in a slot 11 between stops 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, the pivot 8 and block 10 being carried by a lever 17 pivoted at its end 18 to the box 3 and engaging at its end 19 a double control slide valve 20, 20<SP>1</SP>. The slide valve interconnects an oil pump 21 and a double acting servomotor 22, the piston 23 of which is connected to the steering linkage. In operation manual rotation of the worm 2 causes upward or downward movement of the roller 12 to initiate power steering through the lever 17 and slide valve. In the event of failure of the hydraulic system the block 10 engages one or other stop 9, 9<SP>1</SP> to permit normal mechanical steering.
