Abstract

793,195. Spare-wheel carriers. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 9, 1956 [March 1, 1955], No. 6062/55. Class 136(1) In a spare-wheel carrier for motor vehicles the spare wheel 3 is raised and lowered by means of a cable 13 passing over a pulley 5 mounted on a fixed part of the vehicle frame, and a second pulley 10 is arranged for displacement with respect to the vehicle frame, the end of the cable 13 being fixed in the vehicle frame. A support plate 4 is. secured to a frame member 1 intermediate two brackets 2. The plate is slotted to receive the pulley 5 the shaft 6 of which is secured to the plate 4. A cranked handle 8 is in threaded engagement with the sleeve 7. On the end of the handle inside the frame member 1 there is mounted a supporting bracket 9 for the pulley 10. This pulley is prevented from rotating by a bar 12 which extends from the central boss of the pulley and hooks over a bar 11 secured to the frame 1. Holes 1a, 1b are provided in the member 1. A cable 13 is anchored in the hole 1a extends round the pulley 10, comes back through the hole 1b, over the pulley 5 and then extends down to an end 13b. The spare wheel 3 is supported on a beam member 14 which is threaded on the end 13b of the cable and is supported horizontally in a balanced position by a nut 13c. In operation the wheel 3 is placed underneath the brackets 2. The handle 8 is then turned in the direction required to draw the pulley 10 towards the frame member 1, the hooked bar 12 sliding along the bar 11. This lowers the beam 14 which is inserted in the central hole in the wheel 3. studs 14a on the beam 14 beings passed through diametrically opposite bolt holes in the wheel 3. Turning the handle 8 in the opposite direction pushes the pulley 10 away from the frame member 1 and thus draws up the cable 13 and with it, the beam 14 and the wheel 3. The studs 14a can then be passed through apertures 2b in the brackets 2 by turning the wheel by hand until the beam 14 is parallel to the frame member. After further turning of the handle 8 the wheel is held rigidly in place by screwing nuts 15 on to the studs 14a.
