Abstract

In the fluidized chlorination of titaniferous material in the presence of a solid or gaseous reducing agent at 850-1000 DEG C. the temperature is prevented from rising by the addition of an inert solid or liquid material or slurry thereof which volatilizes during said chlorination. The preferred inert material is liquid titanium tetrachloride: solid ferric chloride and silicon tetrachloride, stannic chloride, slurries of ferric chloride in titanium tetrachloride and liquid nitrogen are also referred to. The chloride if used may consist of a part of the crude condensate from a reaction such as that obtained by chlorinating rutile or ilmenite (which may contain silicon, aluminium, chromium, tantalum, vanadium, niobium, and zirconium) in the presence of 10-30 per cent by weight of carbon based on said titanium material or an equivalent quantity of carbon monoxide. The carbon may have a particle size of 100 to 150 microns and the titanium material may be of large average size. Oxygen may initially be used to heat the bed by burning excess coke in the mixture. The coolant may be introduced at e.g. 20-40 DEG C. above or below the fluidized bed, but preferably is admitted as a stream near the top of the shaft furnace. In one example, solid ferric chloride is fed from a U-tube in which it is maintained in fluidized condition by means of an inert gas and through a dip pipe on to the surface of the bed. In a discussion of prior art it is stated that small reactors may be externally heated electrically or that an arc may be used for internal heating: the method of the invention, however, is applied where the size of the reactor is large and heat losses therefore proportionately less. Specifications 724,193 and 762,583 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
