Abstract

792,022. Wave meters. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS, Ltd. Aug. 16, 1956 [Dec. 21, 1955], No. 36642/55. Class 37. A heterodyne wave meter consists of two ganged variable oscillators 1 and 2 with means independent of the ganged control for varying oscillator 1 over a small range, a calibrating source 16 and 17 for producing a series of standard frequencies, a mixer 11 and means for detecting the presence of and counting heterodyne beats. To measure the frequency of the signal received at 19, switch 10 is placed to 20 and switch 8 connects up oscillator 2 and dial 4 is adjusted for zero beat in the headphones. Switch 10 is then placed to 18 to connect up the calibrating source in place of 19 and 4 is again adjusted to the nearest frequency below to again produce zero beat. Finally, oscillator 1 is made to replace oscillator 2 with 19 connected up, control 6 is adjusted to produce zero beat. Switch 10 is then placed to 9, switch 7 is opened and switch 8 is closed and the resultant beat between the oscillations from 1 and 2 is counted by 14 and indicated by 15. This indication added to the frequency to which oscillator 2 was set when in comparison with 16 is an indication of the frequency. An absorption wave meter 21 may also be ganged to I and 2 in order to give a rough indication and hence remove ambiguity. The calibrating source may comprise a crystal-controlled oscillator 16 and a decade divider 17.
