Abstract

In making cellular polyurethanes, the isocyanato-containing polymer to be reacted with water is formed from an arylene diisocyanate, a fatty acid triglyceride having a hydroxyl number of at least 49 and an aliphatic diol or triol of molecular weight less than 200, the ratio of hydroxy groups in the diol or triol to those in the triglyceride being 0.6:1 to 2.3:1, and of total hydroxyl groups to isocyanate groups being 0.65-2 to 1.1:2. Suitable triglycerides are castor oil and blown linseed, tung, poppyseed, hempseed and soya oils. Suitable diols or triols are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylol propane, di- and tri-hydroxybutanes, glycerol, polyethylene or polypropylene glycols, and thiodiethylene glycol. Arylene diisocyanates referred to are 2.4-tolylene; m-phenylene; 4 - chloro - 1,3 - phenylene; 4,41 - biphenylene; and 1,5-naphthylene. The intermediate polyurethane has a viscosity of 750-75,000 centipoises at 30 DEG C. It is mixed with 0.4-1.7 mols. of water per mol of diisocyanate and with a tertiary amine catalyst, e.g. triethylamine, diethylcyclohexylamine, dimethylhexadecylamine, dimethylcetylamine, triethanolamine, pyridine or quinoline. A dispersing agent, e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, lignin sulphonates, triethanolamine laurate, gelatine, or a diethyl cyclohexylamine salt of an alkyl sulphate having 12-16 carbon atoms may also be added, as well as conventional additives, e.g. magnesium carbonate, powdered wood cellulose, bentonite, SiO2, calcium silicate, carbon black, glass fibre, magnesium stearate or methylene distearamide. In examples (1), (2): foams from 2.4-tolylene diisocyanate, castor oil, water and diethylethanolamine as catalyst are compared with foams from the same ingredients plus ethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol (M.W. 200). Example (3) uses heavy-bodied linseed oil, glycerine and 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate. Example (4): heavy-bodied soya oil, glycerine and 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate. Five other basically similar examples are also given. Specification 719,715 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,577,279, 2,602,783 and 2,787,601 are referred to.
