790,429. Electric thickness gauges. VILLAMOSIPARI KOZPONTI KUTATO LABORATORIUM. Feb. 25, 1955 [Feb. 27, 1954], No. 5733/55. Class 37. Apparatus for determining the thickness or cross-sectional area of elongated ferromagnetic material comprises A.C.-fed solenoids 46<SP>1</SP> 46<SP>11</SP> (Figs. 1, 3) through which the test material 45 is fed, a meter connected across a predetermined portion 47 of the coils, where the energizing field is homogeneous, giving indications of the thickness or area. The magnetic field may be constrained by U-shaped yokes 48<SP>1</SP>, 48<SP>11</SP>, the shape and number being dependent on the shape of the test material, e.g. six yokes 48<SP>1</SP> to 48<SP>v1</SP> (Fig. 4) for a hexagonal cross-section rod 45, the six energizing coils 461 to 46<SP>v1</SP> being connected in series. The yokes 48 may be displaced laterally over the surface of the material, measurements being taken from a central energizing coil, or the average of the readings from each yoke unit may be obtained. In one embodiment two bell-shaped yokes are used, one on each side of the test material. The measuring instrument may be connected to a separate pick-up coil located in the region of homogeneous field instead of being connected across a portion of the energizing coils. Variations in thickness or cross-sectional area may be determined by duplicating the apparatus, using a standard test piece in the second measuring unit, and connecting the pick-up coils in opposition.
