Abstract
Hydrocarbons are hydro-desulphurized and a portion of the products are again hydro-desulphurized. The desulphurization may be carried out at a temperature of 500-800 DEG F., a pressure of 50-1000 p.s.i. and a feed rate of 0.5-8 v/v/hr., depending on the particular hydrocarbon fraction being treated; catalysts specified are cobalt and molybdenum oxides, or cobalt molybdate, and nickel and tungsten sulphides and these catalysts may be supported on alumina. Hydrogen or a mixture of gases containing hydrogen may be used for the hydro-desulphurization. Hydrocarbon products, e.g. boiling within the range 400-1050 DEG F. from the coking of residual fuels, e.g. a blend of naphtha and gas oil, may be treated. The hydro-sulphurization of products from a heavy residual fuel, either with recycle of the higher boiling constituents or with their further treatment in a second desulphurization zone, is described. The higher boiling constituents may be mixed with a hydrocarbon boiling in the motor fuel or heating oil ranges before the second desulphurization. Alternatively, the hydrocarbons from the coking operation may first be separated into a heavy gas oil fraction and a lower boiling fraction, the lower boiling fraction being blended with the desulphurized heavy gas oil before a second desulphurization, and the heavy gas oil separated therefrom recycled to the initial desulphurization zone.
