Abstract

789,315. Automatic frequency and phase control systems. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. Nov. 15, 1955 [Aug. 16, 1954], No. 23774/54. Class 38 (4). A television receiver line time base generator 1 is retroactively stabilized in frequency and phase relative to synchronizing pulses by the amplified output of a phase discriminator 4 and the frequency of the generator is swept periodically over a range when not synchronized with the pulses to enlarge the catching range. The range may be so large that the frequency can lock on to different line frequencies of different transmission systems. As shown, the output of a coincidence gate 3 to which the generated signal and synchronizing pulses are applied controls the on or off condition of a strobe generator 2 causing a low-frequency search sweep of the generator 1. Alternatively the gate 3 and strobe 2 may be dispensed with and the output of the discriminator control a D.C. amplifier 5 back-coupled to act also as an oscillator, at low control voltages, for frequency sweeping the generator 1. Thus the back-coupled D.C. amplifier or strobe 2 may act also as a phase shift or Miller transitron oscillator. The generator 1 may be frequency varied through a resistance valve circuit or may be a grid-controlled multi-vibrator. The input to the phase discriminator 4 from the time base generator may be a harmonic of the frequency of the latter.
