Abstract

<PICT:0788682/III/1> Sodium triphosphate in the low temperature modification is prepared by dehydrating one or more sodium ortho-phosphates and/or pyrophosphates at a temperature below 450 DEG C. in an atmosphere containing from 20-100 per cent by volume of water vapour. The dehydration of the starting phosphates may be effected by heating powdered mixtures thereof in a humid atmosphere, but is preferably effected by spray drying solutions thereof in a gaseous phase consisting of superheated water vapour with a temperature of 200 DEG to 450 DEG C. The solution may be sprayed through a binary nozzle by means of water vapour or a mixture containing it, under pressure, and in addition superheated water vapour may be injected into the spraying tower preferably so that it strikes the sprayed phosphate solution as it enters. As shown in the drawing a vessel 1 is fed with water, sodium carbonate and ortho-phosphoric acid from pipes 3, 4 and 5 and the solution so formed is pumped by pump 6 to a spraying nozzle 7 in a tower 8. Superheated steam from heater 10 at a temperature of about 420 DEG C. is passed in at 9 around the nozzle 7 and air heated to 450 DEG C. is passed in at 11. The gases leave the spraying tower at 14 at about 300 DEG to 350 DEG C. and the sodium triphosphate product is removed by a conveyer 15. The waste gases pass through a dust remover 18 and a heat exchanger 12 where their heat is transferred to fresh air entering the system for supply to the spraying tower by means of line 11. Examples refer to the dehydration of a finely-powdered mixture containing disodium phosphate and monosodium phosphate in a molar proportion of 2 : 1 at 400 DEG C., the starting phosphate being placed in a heated tube through which is passed air and water vapour; a further example describes the neutralization of ortho-phosphoric acid with sodium carbonate solution to obtain a starting phosphate which is sprayed at 6 atmospheres pressure into a spraying tower through which air at 450 DEG C. is passed. Additional water vapour is blown into the tower so that the waste gas leaving the tower contains 40 per cent by volume of water vapour. The sodium triphosphate formed leaves the tower at 350 DEG C., and contains 98 per cent of the low temperature form.
