Abstract

A vulcanizable composition comprises a silicone, a filler, a vulcanizing agent and an organo-tin compound in amount, e.g. of 0.1 to 2.0 per cent by weight of the silicone. As silicones there are used highly viscous or rubbery polymeric siloxanes, silmethylenes or siloxane-silmethylenes. Organo-tin compounds specified are polymeric organo-tin oxides and hexaorgano-distannoxanes in which the organic radicals may be, e.g. ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, t-butyl or phenyl radicals and the terminal radicals may be alkyl, aryl, alkenyl, hydroxyl or carboxyl radicals; tin alkoxides, e.g. dibutyl-butoxy tin; organo-tin carboxylates of monobasic or polybasic saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids; reaction products of organo-tin halides with compounds containing a methylene group activated by a vicinal -CO, -NH2, -CN or -SO2 group; tin salts of carboxylic acids, e.g. tin-stearate, -palmitate, -oleate, -ricinoleate, and -chelate. In examples, rubbers were made from compositions of (1) a dimethylpolysiloxane, silica, titania, benzoyl peroxide and polymeric dibutyl-tin oxide in methylene chloride; (2) dimethylpolysiloxane, kieselguhr, t-butyl perbenzoate and hexabutyl distannoxane; (3) dimethylpolysiloxane, titania, silicic acid, benzoylperoxide and the reaction product of diethyl tin oxide and diethyl-dichloro-stannane; and (4) dimethylpolysiloxane, silica, benzoyl peroxide and tin stearate.
