Abstract

A fertilizer containing tri-calcium phosphate is made by heating an alumino-phosphate rock with calcium sulphate and carbonaceous material (coal, coke or anthracite) at a temperature of about 1100 DEG C. or higher. The reaction mixture contains 2 to 7 mols. CaO per mol. of P2O5. The aluminium phosphate is converted to calcium phosphate, and the aluminium sulphate formed is reduced to give sulphur and/or sulphur dioxide. The sulphur released may be recovered in elemental form by admitting an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, or as sulphur dioxide by blowing in air or oxygen. In examples, alumino-phosphate rock (e.g. wavellite from Senegal), coal and calcium sulphate (preferably hemi hydrate) are mixed in proportions of 3.3 mols. CaO and 3 mols. coal per mol. of P2O5, and the mixture ground to 85 mesh. The mixture is then granulated with steam and dried at 60 DEG to 80 DEG C. The granulated product, of about 6 mesh, is then heated in a muffle furnace or rotating kiln to 1050 DEG to 1150 DEG C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen for 1 hour. The sulphur and gases are collected, and the product treated with steam at 1200 DEG to 1400 DEG C. to remove fluorine. The calcium sulphate used may consist of waste gypsum obtained in the processing of other phosphate rock as a filter cake which is dried at 125 DEG C. and ground.
