Abstract
787,424. Making electroacoustic diaphragms. WHITELEY ELECTRICAL RADIO CO., Ltd., and WHITELEY, A. H. April 12, 1954 [April 13, 1953], No. 10037/53. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXIX] A diaphragm for an electroacoustic device is made by a process comprising the steps of (i) lightly impregnating a sheet of open woven linen or cotton cambric with a hardenable synthetic resin. (ii) Forming the sheet to the shape of the diaphragm required, as shown in Fig. 1, in a heated press, the resin being cured to the point where the sheet has acquired a substantial degree of permanent stiffness. (iii) Passing through the permeable fabric, by suction or pressure, a suspension of fibres in water, so depositing a layer of fibrous pulp. The fibres are beaten to a small size and include those of cotton, sisal, wood pulp and cellulose. Different materials may be deposited at different parts of the conical axes 10, to break up resonances which may tend to occur, or the thickness of the deposit may be varied locally for the same purpose, or holes can be cut in the cambric if desired. (iv) Applying heat and pressure to the fibre with the wet deposit in a press similar to that used in step (ii) but with at least one face covered with metal gauze to allow steam to escape. (v) Allowing the deposit to dry and coating the deposited area with a cement to bond the fibres of the deposit to those of the cambric. The cement can be of the solvent type and/or of a type including a .thermoplastic or thermosetting material, a cellulose stoving enamel being suitable. (vi) Allowing the solvent to evaporate and again placing the diaphragm in a heated press. Alternatively, but less desirably, the cement may be included in the liquid suspension to shorten the process. The surround 11 is coated with material to seal the interstices in the cambric, e.g. rubber solution, to prevent sound radiation. To assemble the diaphragm in a loudspeaker, Fig. 5, the disc 14 in the centre of the diaphragm is pushed out and a coil support 17, with coil 18, is attached to it. A centring spider 19, which may be made in the same way as the diaphragm, is cemented to the assembly, which is then mounted in a housing 20 with the coil in the air gap of a magnetic structure 21.
