In a process for treating splints for matches, the splints are fed through an inlet 5 (Fig. 2) to a casing 4 containing a rotating impact wheel 2 having two rows of axial rods 7 mounted between a disc 35 and an annular member 10 and carrying rows of radial link rods 8, the arrangement being such and the speed of.rotation of the impact wheel chosen so that the splints are brought into contact with the rods 7 or 8 with such a force that splints having a bending strength of less, for example 20 per cent less, than the average strength of perfect splints are broken in passing through the impact wheel to an outlet 6. The impact wheel 2 is rotated by an electric motor 1 and provides a fauning action to convey the splints. The disc 35 is mounted on a curved hub 9 fixed to the horizontal shaft 3 of the motor 1. Broken splints are afterwards removed in a separate operation. In a modification, the impact wheel is mounted on a hollow vertical shaft and a feed wheel arranged within the impact wheel and rotatable on a shaft passing through the hollow shaft. The feed wheel has a conical hub with a series of upstanding radial fins and the two wheels are driven by separate motors so that any required relative speed may be attained. In a modified form of impact wheel, baffles are mounted between a single row of axial rods forming with the disc and annular member a series of four-sided passages.
