Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions comprise a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble copolymer of ethylene and/or propylene and one or more nitrogen-containing unsaturated organic compounds. Specified nitrogen-containing compounds are mono- or polycarboxylic acid amides, e.g. the amides of acrylic and metacrylic acids and their higher homologues and fumaramide, nitriles, e.g. acrylonitrile, fumaronitrile and maleonitrile, and hydrazides, e.g. maleic hydrazide. The olefin may be polymerized with a polyunsaturated nitrogen-containing compound, or with a doubly unsaturated compound not containing nitrogen, e.g. isoprene, and the product thereafter polymerized with nitrogencontaining compounds. The copolymers may be modified, e.g. by introducing straight-chain groups containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, to impart viscosity index improving and pourpoint depressing properties. Specification 768,701 is referred to.ALSO:Oil-soluble copolymers of ethylene and/or propylene and one or more nitrogen-containing unsaturated organic compounds are used as lubricating oil additives. Specified nitrogen-containing compounds are mono- or poly-carboxylic acid amides, e.g. the amides of acrylic and methacrylic acids and their higher homologues and fumaramide, nitriles, e.g. acrylonitrile, fumaronitrile and maleonitrile, and hydrazides, e.g. maleic hydrazide. The olefin may be polymerized with a polyunsaturated nitrogen-containing compound, or with a doubly unsaturated compound not containing nitrogen, e.g. isoprene, and the product thereafter polymerized with nitrogen-containing compounds. The copolymers may be prepared by high pressure and high temperature methods using catalysts or radiators. Specification 768,701 is referred to.
