Abstract
The invention comprises vinyl silanes of the formula CH2 = CHSi(R)2H where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, and polymers of the formula [-Si(R2)CH2CH2-]n prepared therefrom by contacting with platinum dispersed on charcoal. The silanes are prepared by reduction of the corresponding vinyldiorganochlorosilane with lithium aluminium hydride. Examples of the radical R are methyl, ethyl, octadecyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, phenyl, tolyl, xenyl, naphthyl and benzyl. The polymerization reaction is preferably effected at 50-250 DEG C. The products range from liquids to solids, including some cyclic polymers, e.g. dimers, and are useful as dielectric materials. The starting silanes are useful as water-repellent agents on fabrics. The examples describe the preparation of dimethyl-, diethyl-, diphenyl- and methylphenylvinyl silanes, of the dimers 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl-, tetraethyl- and tetraphenyl-1,4-disilacyclohexanes and 1,4 - dimethyl - 1,4 - diphenyl - 1,4-disilacyclohexane, of the corresponding higher polysilethylenes, and of polycyclohexylmethylsilethylene from cyclohexylmethylvinylsilane. U.S.A. Specification 2,637,738 is referred to.
