Abstract

785,767. Heating and coaling buildings; refrigerating. CARBA AKT.-GES. May 21, 1955, No. 14714/55. Classes 29, 64(2) and 64(3) A central heating and cooling plant comprises a central heat exchange means 1 and room heating and cooling radiators 2 connected by pipes 3 and 4 and evacuated to form a closed substantially air free circulation system containing a non-combustible, non-toxic, scentless and volatile heat transfer medium, such as dichlorotetrafluorethane or bromochlorodifluoromethane. The liquid thermal medium contained in the device 1 is evaporated by heating by water from a boiler 7, the saturated or slightly superheated vapour leaving the upper end of the device passing through pipe 3 to the radiators 2, condensate being returned by pipe 4 to the device 1. If desired, the condensate may be collected in a vessel and pumped back to the device 1. A thermally controlled injection valve 8 opens wider with increase of temperature in the pipe 3 to pass more condensate back for heating. The radiators 2 are manually or automatically controlled according to room temperature. When used for cooling, the medium passes from the pipe 3, connections to the device 1 being closed, through a compressor 10 and condenser 14 and, as liquid, through pipe 4 to radiator 22 and as vapour returns to the compressor. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the radiators are constituted by pipes 2 arranged in the hollow spaces 26 between the ceiling joists 27, aluminium radiator plates 29 embedded in the ceiling 28 being connected to the pipes 2 by metallic carriers 30. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 4, a finned pipe 2, slightly inclined to the horizontal, is arranged in a recess below a window behind a wainscot 34 with lower and upper openings 36, 37 for air flow. When the pipes are cold for cooling, the air is drawn downwardy by fans 38. A collecting vessel 39 for condensed water with a drain 40 may be provided below the radiator body.
