Abstract
A process for removing metallic sodium from a liquid polymer solution produced by the solution polymerization of a diolefin in the presence of a sodium catalyst comprises treating the polymer solution with an excess of an anhydrous organic acid in a polymerization zone to convert the sodium metal into a filterable salt. Specified diolefin polymers are those of butadiene and its copolymer with styrene. The organic acid is preferably a monobasic acid containing from one to five carbon atoms, e.g. acetic acid. The polymer solution, after treatment with the acid, may be treated with an exess of ammonia gas to neutralize all acid, filtered to separate solid salts, and distilled to recover the polymer solution as bottoms. Specification 785,704 is referred to.
