785,534. Metal structural elements. WLODEK, T. W. Jan. 18, 1954 '[June 11, 1953], No. 34358/55. Divided out of 785,533 [Group XXII]. Class 20(2) [Also in Groups XXI, XXII, XXIII and XXVIII] Metal structural elements such as rails, plates, bars, rods, tubes, sheets, channels, their joints and fillets have at least one portion provided with depressions at spaced intervals on the surface said portion consisting of plastically deformed material in juxtaposed relation to portions of said material which have not been subjected to direct deformation and have less plastic deformation, said depressions having . a depth of between one thousandth to one sixteenth of an inch. The depressions are arranged as shown in Figs. 2 to 8 and their cross-section is formed as shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The depressions create locKedin residual stresses in the elements and prevent fatigue and fretting.
