Abstract

Esters of methacrylic acid, e.g. the methyl, butyl and 2-ethylhexyl esters are polymerized to form low molecular weight polymers ranging from the dimer to those having a degree of polymerization of up to 50, by heating the monomers under autogenous pressure at temperatures between 225 DEG and 350 DEG C. in the absence of polymerization catalysts and inhibitors. If desired, the starting material may consist of a mixture of the monomer with one or more polymers ranging from the dimer to the pentamer. The polymerization product is liquid and is fractionally distilled under reduced pressure to separate the various low polymers.ALSO:Low molecular weight polymers of methacrylic acid esters, e.g the dimers, trimers, tetramers and pentamers, are made by heating the monomer under autogenous pressure at temperatures between 225 DEG and 350 DEG C. in the absence of polymerization catalysts and inhibitors. The various low polymers are separated from the reaction mixture by fractional distillation under reduced pressure. The prepartion of low molecular weight polymers of methyl, butyl and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylates is described, the individual polymers being separated and characterized by means of their boiling point, density, refractive index and saponification value.
