In a centrifuge wherein a vertical driving shaft is provided at its lower end with a coupling member which interlocks with a second coupling member provided on a driven shaft which carries a centrifuge basket, the coupling members are shaped to permit the driven shaft and the basket to gyrate about a centre at the level of the coupling members so that one member engages the periphery of the other at substanti - ally that level to prevent lateral movement between them. The basket 10 hangs from the lower part 11b of a shaft 11 the upper part 11a of which is mounted in bearings 29, 30 in a stationary sleeve 28 formed with an upward extension 41 secured to a casing 21 which houses a turbine wheel 19 by which the basket is rotated. A spherical surface 39 on the extension 41 seats in a like surface 40 in a ring mounted in a stationary hanger 14 bolted to the underside of the casing 21 permitting gyratory motion of the sleeve 28 and shaft 11 under control of a rubber buffer 42 disposed between the extension 41 and the hanger 14. At the top of the shaft 11, radial teeth 45 with convex edges and faces engage teeth with flat faces on a driving ring 43b secured to a drive shaft 18 on which the turbine wheel 19 is mounted : the teeth 45 also have convex edges engaging a sleeve 46 on the driving ring 43b. The hanger 14 supports the friction bands 27 of a brake adapted to engage a brake drum 24 secured to the shaft 11 and providing a reservoir 75 for cooling water supplied through a pipe 76 and withdrawn by a scoop 77 operative only when the shaft is rotating rapidly. A wall or partition 59 spaced from the sleeve 28 and carried by the shaft 11 excludes the water from an oil reservoir within the wall, oil being supplied to this reservoir from an inlet 60 in the hanger 14 through annular chambers 51, 50 therein and past the bearings 29, 30. Spent oil is scooped from the reservoir during rotation, at 62 and flows up an annular chamber 55 between the sleeve 28 and the partition 59 which separates it from the incoming oil between the bearings 29, 30. From the chamber 55 it flows through passages 64, 63, 65 to either a discharge pipe 72 or to an overflow 70 which may replace the pipe 72 if a shut off valve is provided in the oil inlet pipe 61.
